The game of foosball had it's earliest beginnings as a wooden box with wood dowel rods in the late 1800's and is generally believed to have started in Western Europe. While the earliest US patents for a foosball table came out in 1901 and the game of foosball did not become widespread in the US or Europe until after World War II, foosball really exploded in popularity in the middle 1970's in the US. Organized competition really began to grow all over the world where the game of foosball has become a big money professional sport.
Foosball is played with a ball that is moved by manipulating rods to which small figures of players are attached. The machine can vary in size, but is typically about 5 feet long and 3 feet wide. The foosball usually contains 8 rods or rows of players, which are plastic or wooden figures mounted on horizontal bars. Each team controls 4 rows of figures, and teams of 1 or 2 human players compete in a high action competition to kick the plastic ball into the opponent's goal. There is a goal at each end and a place to serve on each side in the middle. Each player/team uses their handles to move their men to strike the ball into the opposing teams goal. You always go to your right and defend at your left. The 3 Golden Rules of foosball are (1) Commercial machines have 9 Balls, so you play best out of 9 which is first team to 5 goals. (2) If a ball goes into the goal legally, it is a point, no matter who hit it. (3) NO SPINNING THE RODS.
More complete rules include coin toss to see who serves first. Serve the ball through the hole any way you want, but you must touch the ball with a man before you score. After goals, team scored upon serves the ball. Ball off the playfield is given to the team last scored upon. If the ball stops moving and you can't reach it, "Dead Ball" give it to the team last scored upon. You can call 'Time Out' if you have the ball. Make sure the other team is ready before you call 'Time In'. You can't reach into the playfield for the ball while it is in play. Be polite, no swearing, and have fun. You can only have the ball for 15 seconds in any one place.
