The game of foosball had it's earliest beginnings as a wooden box with wood dowel rods in the late 1800's and is generally believed to have started in Western Europe. While the earliest US patents for a foosball table came out in 1901 and the game of foosball did not become widespread in the US or Europe until after World War II, foosball really exploded in popularity in the middle 1970's in the US. Organized competition really began to grow all over the world where foosball tables became a big money professional sport.
Foosball is played with a ball that is moved by manipulating rods to which small figures of players are attached. The foosball table can vary in size, but is typically about 5 feet long and 3 feet wide. Foosball tables usually contains 8 rods or rows of players, which are plastic or wooden figures mounted on horizontal bars. Each team controls 4 rows of figures, and teams of 1 or 2 human players compete in a high action competition to kick the plastic ball into the opponent's goal. There is a goal at each end of the foosball table and a place to serve on each side in the middle. Each player/team uses their handles to move their men to strike the ball into the opposing teams goal. You always go to your right and defend at your left.
